Dear Ms. Styles,

I am writing in strong support of the recommendations made in your "Dear Colleague" letter dated August 18, 2015 in regards to student therapy records.

It is crucial that students can trust that their therapy records will remain confidential, especially for survivors of sexual assault for whom on-campus counseling may be critical to recovery. Since your letter was issued, there have been great strides on campuses, including the University of Oregon, to better ensure the confidentiality of student medical records.

We applaud the Department of Education for issuing this important guidance and urge you to to stand by it.

Please find attached the signatures of more than 48,000 Daily Kos members who signed a petition reading, "Don't allow campus administrators to violate rape survivors' privacy. Eliminate privacy loopholes in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)."
